This is a remote, wilderness trek to the base of Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest mountain. It is one of the toughest base camp treks in Nepal, with long days, big altitude gains, and the crossing of Shipton La (4,220 m). A licensed guide and the correct permits are required: the Makalu Barun National Park entry permit, the local rural municipality permit, and a TIMS card. Spade Himalaya arranges all of these. (Note: Makalu Base Camp lies in Sankhuwasabha, not the Everest/Khumbu region, so no Khumbu permit applies.) The high point is Makalu Base Camp (about 4,870 m), with rest-day viewpoints up to about 5,000 m. Teahouses here are simple and far apart, so this trek suits experienced, well-prepared trekkers who want true solitude.

Overview of Makalu Base Camp Trek 18-Days

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an 18-day wilderness journey to the foot of Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain on Earth, standing just 19 km southeast of Everest in the Mahalangur Himalaya. It is one of the least-travelled major treks in Nepal, a real expedition into the Barun valley with a fraction of the foot traffic you find on the classic routes. The reward is raw, unspoilt Himalaya: glaciers, waterfalls, rhododendron forest, and an amphitheatre of giant peaks at the end of the trail.

The route runs entirely inside Makalu Barun National Park, a 1,500 km² protected area established in 1992 as the eastern extension of Sagarmatha National Park. It is the only protected area in the world with an elevation gain of more than 8,000 m, enclosing everything from tropical forest in the Arun valley to the snow summit of Makalu, and it shelters snow leopard, red panda, and clouded leopard. From Tumlingtar the trail climbs through Sherpa and Rai villages, crosses the high ridge of Shipton La (4,220 m), and follows the Barun valley up to base camp.

At Makalu Base Camp you stand below a wall of ice and rock. Makalu’s two great satellite peaks, Kangchungtse (Makalu II, 7,678 m) and Chomo Lonzo (7,804 m), rise across a high saddle, Baruntse (7,129 m) fills the head of the valley, and on a clear day you can see the immense east (Kangshung) face of Everest itself. Makalu was first climbed on 15 May 1955 by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition, and the approach has lost none of its wild, pioneering feel.

Spade Himalaya runs this trek with licensed Nepali guides who know the Barun valley, manage the remote logistics, and carry a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter to monitor how you are adjusting. Because Makalu is so remote and demanding, it is best suited to fit trekkers with some prior multi-day or high-altitude experience. If you prefer a more supported, busier base camp trek, the Everest Base Camp Trek and the longer Everest Base Camp via Kala Patthar visit Makalu’s famous neighbour, the high-pass Everest Three Passes Trek is the ultimate Khumbu circuit, and the Manaslu Circuit Trek offers similar remoteness on a teahouse loop.

Trips Itinerary

A Spade Himalaya representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in a private vehicle. You can rest or stroll around Thamel for any last-minute shopping. You meet your guide for a pre-trip briefing, where the team checks your gear and completes the permit paperwork. Bring your passport, passport photos, and a copy of your insurance.

A scenic flight to Tumlingtar opens up views of the eastern Himalaya. From the airstrip you drive on rough mountain roads to the village of Seduwa, the gateway to Makalu Barun National Park, passing terraced farms and rural settlements. It is a long travel day, but it carries you deep into a region few trekkers ever reach. Overnight in Seduwa.

The walking begins with a gradual climb through forest, farmland, and small villages to Tashi Gaon, a Sherpa settlement and the last permanent village before the high country. It is a gentle introduction to the trail and a fine first taste of the region’s rural culture, with the big mountains still hidden behind the ridges ahead.

  • Duration: Walking: 5 to 6 hrs.

A steep, demanding day climbing through dense forest, crossing streams, and gaining serious altitude to the ridgetop camp of Khongma Danda. The views open out dramatically as you rise above the treeline. The big height gain is why a rest day follows: it is important not to push higher too fast from here.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs

A crucial rest day to let your body adjust before the high ridge ahead. Rather than staying idle, you take short walks to higher ground around Khongma Danda, climbing a little and returning to sleep low. The exposed ridge gives wide views of the surrounding peaks, and the day greatly improves your chances of a safe crossing of Shipton La.

  • Duration: Walking: 2 to 4 hrs

The most spectacular day of the approach. You cross a series of small passes and the main ridge of Shipton La at 4,220 m, with glacial tarns and panoramic mountain views, then make a long descent into the forested Barun valley to the camp at Dobate. The dramatic change from high ridge to deep valley is unforgettable.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs

You follow the Barun river up the valley through alpine meadows, forest, and rugged terrain, with waterfalls tumbling from the cliffs and peaks rising on every side. Yangri Kharka is a high pasture used by herders, a peaceful spot to camp deep in the heart of the national park.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs

The trail climbs steadily into a wilder, more open landscape, with the first close views of Makalu and its neighbours. The terrain is rougher and the air thinner now, so the pace slows. Langmale Kharka is the last stop before base camp, set among moraine and meadow beneath the giants.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs ·

The big day. A strenuous walk over rocky, glacial terrain leads to Makalu Base Camp, the goal of the trek. As you arrive, the full amphitheatre opens up: Makalu towering above, Baruntse at the head of the valley, and Everest and Lhotse beyond. It is one of the great base camp arrivals in the Himalaya.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs ·

A well-earned day to soak it all in. You can explore the base camp area and climb a little higher to viewpoints around 5,000 m for the finest angles on Makalu’s south face and the east (Kangshung) face of Everest. It is a photographer’s dream and a quiet, powerful reward for the long approach.

  • Duration: Walking: 2 to 4 hrs

The return begins. You retrace the Barun valley, descending through moraine, meadow, and forest back to Yangri Kharka. Losing altitude makes the walking easier and the air richer, and the valley reveals new views in the opposite direction as you go.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs.

A day of gentle ups and downs through forest and valley back to the camp at Dobate, with constant views of the surrounding landscape. The lower altitude and warmer air feel welcome after the high days at base camp.

  • Duration: Walking: 6 to 7 hrs.

You recross the Shipton La ridge and return to Khongma Danda, retracing your steps through alpine meadow and forest. A shorter day, with a final chance to enjoy the high panorama before you drop back below the treeline for good.

  • Duration: Walking: 5 to 6 hrs ·

A long descent through forest and rural settlements back to the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon, enjoying the last of the high Himalayan views. The greenery and birdsong return as you lose height, and the walking becomes easy and pleasant.

  • Duration: Walking: 5 to 6 hrs.

The final trekking day descends gently through charming villages and terraced fields back to Seduwa, where the walk began. It is a relaxed finish, with time to thank your crew and reflect on the journey through one of Nepal’s wildest corners.

  • Duration: Walking: 5 to 6 hrs.

A scenic drive on rough mountain roads back to Tumlingtar, watching the landscape change one last time. Overnight in Tumlingtar near the airstrip, ready for the morning flight.

  • Duration: Driving: 7 to 8 hrs ·

A scenic flight returns you to Kathmandu, completing the loop. The rest of the day is free to rest, shop in Thamel, and celebrate. In the evening, Spade Himalaya presents your trip-completion certificate.

After breakfast, a Spade Himalaya representative transfers you to the international airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your Makalu Base Camp Trek.

Good to Know

Before you go

  • Permits and ID. Bring your passport, four passport photos, and a readable copy of your insurance to the pre-trip meeting so Spade Himalaya can arrange your Makalu Barun National Park permit, local permit, and TIMS card.
  • Money. Carry enough Nepalese rupees in cash from Kathmandu. There are no ATMs on the trek, and the region is too remote for card payments, so budget for drinks, snacks, charging, and tips.
  • Fitness. This is a demanding, remote trek. Train for months with cardio and back-to-back long hikes, and come with some prior multi-day or high-altitude trekking experience if you can.

Makalu is one of Nepal’s quietest major trails. There are fewer teahouses, simpler food (expect a lot of potatoes, rice, and Tibetan bread), and limited or no connectivity for days at a time. The trade-off is genuine solitude and a sense of expedition that the busier routes cannot match. Pack a little extra patience and self-sufficiency.

The itinerary follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle with an acclimatization day at Khongma Danda and a steady approach to base camp. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, walk slowly, avoid alcohol high up, and tell your guide early if you feel unwell. Carry altitude medication if your doctor advises it. Because evacuation here means a helicopter, comprehensive insurance is essential.

Accommodation. Basic teahouses lower down and simple lodges or tented camps higher up, with cold nights, so the provided or personal sleeping bag matters.
Food. Staples are potatoes, rice, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew, and Tibetan bread. Choice is limited at altitude, and potatoes are an excellent energy source for the long days.
Drinking water. Refill and purify with tablets or a filter rather than relying on bottled water, which is scarce in such a remote park.
Weather. Conditions on Shipton La can change fast. Your guide checks the forecast and adjusts timing for a safe crossing.

Smooth and flexible itinerary in winter

The itinerary was well paced and adapted when snowfall slowed progress. Acclimatization days in Manang were handled properly, and the overall flow of the trek remained stress-free despite changing mountain conditions

Excellent organization on a demanding winter route

The Annapurna Circuit trek with Spade Himalaya was very well structured from start to finish. Our guide managed acclimatization carefully and made cautious, informed decisions around Thorong La conditions. In winter, that level of judgment made a real difference

Trips FAQs

Why Choose the Makalu Base Camp Trek?

Expand all

Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world at 8,485 m, standing in the Mahalangur Himalaya just 19 km southeast of Everest (Wikipedia, retrieved 2026-06-17). Its base camp sits at about 4,870 m in the Barun valley, inside Makalu Barun National Park in Sankhuwasabha district, eastern Nepal. The trek starts and ends with a flight to Tumlingtar.

Makalu is the wildest and least crowded of the major base camp treks. The Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek are more supported and busier, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is a classic high-pass loop (also offered as a longer route via the Thorong La Pass), and the Manaslu Circuit Trek is the closest match for remoteness on a teahouse route.

Trek Difficulty: Who Can Trek?

Expand all

It is graded challenging and is one of the toughest base camp treks in Nepal. You walk 6 to 7 hours a day for over two weeks, cross Shipton La at 4,220 m, and reach base camp at about 4,870 m on rough, remote terrain. There is no technical climbing, but strong fitness and ideally some prior trekking experience are essential.

Guide Requirement & Trek Regulations

Expand all

You need the Makalu Barun National Park entry permit, the local rural municipality permit, and a TIMS card, all arranged by Spade Himalaya. Makalu Base Camp is not in the Everest/Khumbu region, so no Khumbu permit applies. A licensed guide is required, which is sensible anyway given how remote and unmarked parts of the trail are.

Trekker's Well-Being & Safety

Expand all

It is a real consideration, with several nights above 3,500 m and a base camp near 4,870 m, plus the Shipton La crossing. The itinerary builds in an acclimatization day at Khongma Danda and a steady profile, and your guide carries a pulse oximeter for daily checks. Drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and tell your guide early if you feel unwell. Descending is the most effective treatment.

Yes, it is mandatory and especially important here. Your policy must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation, since this region is remote and a road rescue is not possible. Arrange it in your home country before you fly, and leave a copy with Spade Himalaya at the pre-trip meeting so the team can respond quickly in an emergency.

Remote Wilderness Experience & Accommodation

Expand all

Very remote. The Barun valley sees a tiny fraction of the trekkers on the Everest or Annapurna routes. Accommodation is in simple teahouses lower down and basic lodges or occasional tented camps higher up, where facilities, food choice, and connectivity are limited. That isolation is exactly the appeal: genuine wilderness and solitude beneath an 8,000 m peak.

Best Time to Trek Makalu Base Camp

Expand all

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with stable weather, clearer skies, and a safer Shipton La crossing. Winter is severe and the high camps are bitterly cold, while the monsoon brings rain, cloud, and leeches at lower elevations. For how winter conditions affect Himalayan trekking generally, see our Annapurna winter guide.

Mountain Views & Trek Highlights

Expand all

Yes. From Makalu Base Camp and the higher viewpoints around it, you can see the great east face of Everest, known as the Kangshung face, along with Lhotse, Baruntse, and Makalu’s satellite peaks Kangchungtse and Chomo Lonzo. It is one of the few places to view Everest’s dramatic eastern side without joining a full Everest expedition.
