Notice

The Langtang Valley sits inside Langtang National Park, Nepal’s first Himalayan national park. It is close to Kathmandu, so there is no flight. You just drive in.

The high point is Tserko Ri (4,984 m), an optional dawn hike from Kyanjin Gompa. From the top, you see Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) and the whole range.

Langtang is a national park, so a licensed guide and permits are required. Spade Himalaya arranges your guide, the park permit, and the TIMS card.

Overview of Langtang Valley Trek 10-Days

Quick answer: The Langtang Valley Trek is a 10-day, moderate trek north of Kathmandu, reaching Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m) and the Tserko Ri viewpoint (4,984 m). It needs no flight, suits fit beginners, and requires a Langtang National Park permit, a TIMS card, and a guide (Nepal Tourism Board, retrieved 2026-06-26).

The Langtang Valley Trek is a 10-day Himalayan journey just north of Kathmandu. It leads into Langtang National Park, often called the “Valley of Glaciers”. This was Nepal’s first Himalayan national park, set up in 1976. So you get high peaks, glaciers, and quiet alpine scenery, close to the capital.

The trek starts with a scenic drive to the mountain village of Syabrubesi (1,460 m). The road follows the Trishuli River through the hills. Then the walking begins. First, you climb through rhododendron and bamboo forest beside the Langtang Khola. Next, you pass Tamang villages, yak pastures, and clear streams. Slowly, the forest opens into wide meadows below the peaks.

The heart of the trek is Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m). Here you find an old Buddhist monastery and a famous yak-cheese factory. From the village, you can hike to two great viewpoints. Tserko Ri (4,984 m) is the higher one, and Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) is the gentler option. Both give a 360-degree view of icy giants like Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) and Gangchempo (6,387 m). So you get big mountains and warm Tamang culture in one trip.

The Langtang Valley was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake. A huge landslide buried the old Langtang village. Since then, the villages and lodges have been rebuilt. So trekking here today directly supports a community that is still recovering. The trek covers about 65 km in total. It is graded moderate, with one rest day at Kyanjin Gompa to help you adjust.

Spade Himalaya runs this trek with licensed Nepali guides. So your guide sets a safe pace, watches the weather, and checks your health each day. The route suits fit beginners and seasoned hikers alike. In the same Langtang region, you can also do the cultural Tamang Heritage Trek, the easy Helambu Trek, or the longer Langtang Gosaikunda Trek. Want a different region? Try the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, or the short Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. For more remote wilderness, see the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

In the evening, you meet your guide for a short briefing on the trek and gear. If there is time, you can visit Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple. Then get an early night.

  • Duration: 30 min Drive
  • Max Altitude: 1,400 m
  • Meals: Breakfast Included
  • Accommodation: Shared 3 Star Hotel

After breakfast, you set off on the scenic drive to Syabrubesi. The road follows the Trishuli River through hills, farms, and small towns. Midway, you stop at Dhunche for the park permits and TIMS card. Then you continue through forest and over bridges. By late afternoon, you reach Syabrubesi. So you can relax, and maybe soak in the nearby hot spring.

  • Duration: 7 to 8 hrs drive
  • Max Altitude: 1,916 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Today the trek begins. First, you cross a suspension bridge over the river. Then the trail climbs through mossy forest of pine, fir, and rhododendron. After about three hours, you reach Bamboo for a rest. The path passes a small monastery and pretty waterfalls. You may spot langur monkeys or birds in the trees. By afternoon, you reach Lama Hotel for the night.

  • Duration: 6 to 7 hrs hike
  • Max Altitude: 2,460 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

The trail keeps climbing into the valley. You walk through oak, maple, and bamboo forest. At Ghodatabela, an open pasture, yaks often graze. From here, the path gets steeper. Soon, you catch your first view of Langtang Lirung above. Then the forest opens into meadows. Finally, you reach Langtang Village, a Tibetan-style settlement of stone houses and potato fields.

  • Duration: 5 to 6 hrs hike
  • Max Altitude: 3,450 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Today is a shorter day, but the views grow. The trail climbs through pastures and boulder fields, past mani walls and small bridges. You may see herds of yaks along the way. After about four hours, you reach Kyanjin Gompa. So the afternoon is free to visit the monastery and the yak-cheese factory. Close up, you can see Langtang Lirung, Langshisha, and Dorje Lakpa.

  • Duration: 4 to 5 hrs hike
  • Max Altitude: 3,870 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Today is a rest and exploration day. It also helps you adjust to the altitude. The top option is the steep climb to Tserko Ri (4,984 m), about 2 to 3 hours each way. From the top, you get a 360-degree view of the whole Langtang range. A gentler choice is Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m), which still has superb views. Then you return to Kyanjin Gompa for the night.

  • Duration: 5 to 7 hrs hiking
  • Max Altitude: 4,984 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Now you begin the return. The trail retraces the valley, mostly downhill. So it is easier on the lungs, even if it is long. You pass Langtang Village again and drop back into the forest. The air grows warmer with each hour. You pass Ghodatabela and Bamboo on the way. By evening, you reach Lama Hotel.

  • Duration: 7 to 8 hrs hike
  • Max Altitude: 3,870 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Today you finish the walk. The path drops through pine and oak forest and warm farmland. You pass small Tamang villages and follow the river down to Syabrubesi. The climate turns warm again, and green fields reappear. So you arrive back at the lodge with time to rest. You can take one more soak in the hot spring before dinner.

  • Duration: 4 to 5 hrs hike
  • Max Altitude: 2,460 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Launch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Guest House

After breakfast, you board the bus or jeep back to Kathmandu. The drive retraces the valleys, rivers, and hill towns. On a clear day, you may see the Ganesh Himal range. So break the trip for lunch on the way. By late afternoon, you reach your Thamel hotel. Then you can enjoy a hot shower and a final dinner in town.

  • Duration: 7 to 8 hrs drive
  • Max Altitude: 1,400 m
  • Meals: Breakfast & Launch Included
  • Accommodation: Shared 3 Star Hotel

This is the last day of your trip. After breakfast, a Spade Himalaya guide drives you to the airport. If your flight is later, you can take an optional half-day city tour, for example to Pashupatinath. So you fly home with great photos and warm memories of the Langtang Valley.

Good to Know

Langtang gives you big Himalayan scenery without a long approach. There is no flight, just a scenic drive from Kathmandu. You walk to glaciers and 7,000 m peaks in a few days, through Tamang villages full of warmth. Best of all, your visit supports a valley that has rebuilt with great spirit since 2015.

Spring and autumn are the prime seasons. In spring, the forests bloom red and pink. In autumn, the air is clear after the rains, so the views are at their best. Winter is cold and quiet, with snow up high, and clear days are common. The summer monsoon brings rain and leeches, so most trekkers avoid it.

This trek is moderate, and it suits fit beginners. You walk 5 to 7 hours a day on good trails, with steady climbs. The Tserko Ri hike is the hardest part, because it is steep and high. So train before you come. A few weeks of walking, jogging, and stair climbing makes the trek much more fun.

The plan climbs gradually and adds a rest day at Kyanjin Gompa. So your body has time to adjust before the high hike. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day, and walk slowly. Skip alcohol up high, and eat well for energy. Tell your guide early if you feel a headache or nausea. Going down is the best cure, and your guide carries an oximeter.

Langtang is a national park, so foreigners must trek with a licensed guide. You also need the park permit and a TIMS card. Spade Himalaya is a registered agency, so the guide and permits are all handled for you. You only need your passport, photos, and insurance copy.

The trail runs on cash, and there are no ATMs. So carry enough Nepalese rupees from Kathmandu. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging all cost a small fee that rises with altitude. A power bank and an Ncell SIM are smart to bring. So keep some small notes handy for the villages.

You can extend the trek to fit your time. For example, you can add the sacred Gosaikunda lakes, or link to the Helambu region over a high pass. The Tamang Heritage Trail adds more village culture. There is also the harder Langtang Circuit over the Ganja La pass (5,135 m). So just tell Spade Himalaya your dates and ideas, and we plan the right route.

Trips FAQs

Permits, Guide & Insurance

Expand all

Yes. Langtang is a national park, so foreigners must trek with a licensed guide. You also need two papers: the Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card. Spade Himalaya arranges the guide and both permits. A ranger checks them at the Dhunche gate on the drive in.

The Langtang National Park permit is about NPR 3,000 (around US$25) for foreign trekkers. The TIMS card is about NPR 2,000 (around US$15). So the permits total roughly US$40 per person. Spade Himalaya includes both in the trip cost and sorts the paperwork for you.

Yes, it is a must. Your policy has to cover trekking up to at least 5,000 m and a helicopter rescue. Many normal policies do not, so check the wording first. Arrange it at home before you fly. Then leave a copy with Spade Himalaya at the briefing, so the team can act fast in an emergency.

Trek Difficulty & Altitude

Expand all

It is graded moderate. The Langtang Valley trek difficulty comes from the daily walking, not from any technical climbing. You walk 5 to 7 hours a day on clear trails, with some uphill. The top option, Tserko Ri, reaches 4,984 m. So you need a good level of fitness. With some training first, most healthy people finish it comfortably. In fact, the Langtang trek is one of the best first big-mountain treks in Nepal.

The highest overnight stop is Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m. The highest point you reach is Tserko Ri at 4,984 m, an optional dawn hike on the rest day. A gentler viewpoint, Kyanjin Ri, sits at 4,773 m. So the plan adds a rest day at Kyanjin Gompa to help your body adjust before the high hike.

Best Time to Trek

Expand all

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are best. In spring, the rhododendrons bloom. In autumn, the skies are clear and the views are sharp. Winter is cold, and snow can fall above 3,000 m, but clear days are common. The summer monsoon brings rain, leeches, and landslide risk, so most people skip it.

Accommodation & Facilities

Expand all

You sleep in simple teahouses, usually in twin rooms with shared bathrooms. Higher up, rooms are basic and nights are cold, warmed by a stove in the dining hall. The food is hearty and local. Dal bhat (rice and lentils) is the trekker staple, with free refills. You can also get noodles, soup, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Vegetarian meals are easy to find.

Many teahouses offer Wi-Fi and charging for a small fee. Mobile signal reaches up to Kyanjin Gompa, and Ncell is the best network here. But there are no ATMs on the trek. So carry enough Nepalese rupees in cash from Kathmandu or Dhunche for snacks, drinks, charging, and tips.

Trek Highlights & Views

Expand all

There is no flight. You drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the trailhead, in 7 to 8 hours. The road follows the Trishuli River through Dhunche, about 120 km in all. A private jeep is faster and comfier for small groups. A tourist bus is the budget option. So Langtang is one of the easiest Himalayan treks to reach.

Yes. In April 2015, a huge landslide buried the old Langtang village. It was the worst-hit trekking valley in Nepal. Since then, the villages and lodges have been rebuilt, and the trail is fully open again. So your visit today helps a strong community that is still recovering. Many lodge owners are happy to share their story.
