Dolpo is Nepal’s hidden kingdom. For centuries, its valleys stayed cut off from the outside world. Today the region sits inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, in Nepal’s remote northwest.

Spade Himalaya runs one journey here: the 24 day Upper Dolpo Trek. The route passes the turquoise Phoksundo Lake and crosses the Kang La at 5,360 m. Then it rests at Shey Gompa, beneath the sacred Crystal Mountain. In villages like Saldang, Tibetan Buddhist life continues much as it always has.

Because Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, you trek with a licensed guide and a special permit. Both are included when you book with us. The best windows are April to May and September to October.

This is a demanding expedition, rated 5 of 5 on the Spade Trek Difficulty Scale. So come with solid trekking experience and time to spare. Ask us for the full itinerary and a private departure quote.

FAQs

What permits do I need for Upper Dolpo?

Two: the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit and the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry. A licensed guide is also required by law. All of this is arranged and included when you book with Spade Himalaya.

When is the best time to trek in Dolpo?

April to May and September to October are the prime windows. In these months the passes stay open and the light is superb.

How fit do I need to be?

Very fit. The trek runs 24 days, crosses passes above 5,300 m, and sleeps in remote camps far from roads. So we recommend it only to trekkers with previous high altitude experience.
